Adelaide is the capital and most polluted city in the Australian state of South Australia. It is the five-century-largest city in Australia and is known as the city of churches. Adelaide has a population estimated at over 1.28 million inhabitants. The adjective used to describe people and other qualities of the city is "Adelaidean.
Adelaide is a coastal city situated on the eastern shore of Gulf St. Vincent, on the Fleurieu Peninsula in the northern Adelaide plains. The suburbs reach 20 km from the coast to the foothills but extends 100 km from the town of Gawler in the north to Sellicks Beach in the south.
Named in honor of Queen Adelaide, wife of German origin of King William IV, the city was founded in 1836 as the capital of the British province in Australia free. Colonel William Light, one between the city's founders designed the city and chose the location near the River Torrens in the area originally occupied by indigenous Australian tribe Karuna. Light's project has provided Adelaide city streets in the form of lattice, starbatut of wide boulevards and large squares surrounded PIBL parks everywhere.
As host of the Australian Government and commercial center, Adelaide is a place where there are many financial institutions and government. Most of them are located downtown, along the Avenue of the various cultural and economic districts of the metropolitan area.
Today Adelaide is known for its many festivals and sporting events, cuisine, its long beaches and its wines.
Adelaide is located in one of the most important wine regions of Australia and is bordered by some of the most arid areas in the world - Nullarbor Plain and Great Victoria Desert. However, Adelaide is a green and pleasant city with many parks, crossed by a lovely river.
Although in the past Adelaide had a reputation of being too conservative and quiet, he is a living city with a varied nightlife, with numerous theaters, cinemas and clubs.
