About Canillo - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Canillo - pure skiing enjoyment and tax-free shopping!
Canillo is the capital city of the region with the same name. Here you'll find a great number of Andorra's traditional old mountain houses, the "borda", many of which include restaurants offering traditional cuisine. In Canillo you'll find several historic churches and chapels, many dating back to the 11th century, lending the region and resort a unique charm. For an après-ski fix, many of the locals swear by the "Camping Pla", which offers great parties and equally good cocktails. Also recommended is the Caldea Spa, Europe's largest thermal spa, which is located on a natural hot spring, just a few kilometres from Canillo.
SkiThe Grandvalira ski area, with its same-name lift pass, offer an entire 210 km of piste to enjoy! This ski area is the largest in Europe located outside of the Alps and came into being thanks to the connection between the Soldeu/El Tarter and Pas de la Casa/Grau Roig areas.
Winter sports fans can use 71 lifts to make their way into the ski area and can be found not just in Canillo, but also in El Tarter, Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa. The Grandvalira ski area is quite diverse - here, beginners and experts alike will certainly get their money's worth due to an extremely wide selection of pistes. This way, you don't have to ski the same piste twice in one day (unless you want to you!).
Especially ambitious winter sports fans can anticipate numerous off-piste opportunities, a mogul piste obstacle course, several funparks, boardercross runs, and FIS race tracks.
Wi-Fi hotspots can be found throughout the entire ski area, providing winter sports fans with internet access. Since February 2019, you can also use your Grandvalira lift pass in the Ordino Acalís ski area, with 30 further kilometres of piste and 15 lifts.
Canillo is not far from Grandvalira's après-ski centre: Pas de la Casa. Here party animals can celebrate till dawn! But you can also have a good night out in Canillo's various bars. The pub "Camping Pla" regularly organises parties, which are especially popular among the locals. A highlight in Canillo is certainly the Mont Magic Zip-Lining. At 40 m altitude with up to 80 km/h and a length of 550 m it's a great experience after skiing! Additionally, you can spend all remaining energy at the "Palau de Gel", a sports and community centre, playing tennis or squash, skating, and swimming. After a good day of sports, you can taste some traditional Andorran dishes. Why not try "Tupi" cheese? This regional speciality is made in a jug and left to mature with liquor and garlic.
Those who prefer to take in cultural highlights will find a few medieval sights in Canillo, like its church or the old mill.
Spending a winter holiday in Andorra also means enjoying unique winter wonderlands outside of the Alps. Therefore, be sure to take a walk through the wintry landscape or visit the surrounding cities like Soldeu or El Tarter.
The Grandvalira ski area has about 30 km of cross-country trails. These trails centre themselves around Grau Roig, which is about 12 minutes away by car from Canillo. Some trails can be found at an altitude of approx. 2100 m and therefore offer a beautiful view of the region. There's also one trail in Soldeu with the "Vall d'Incles", which lets cross-country fans glide for about 2 km through the same-name valley. Further trails can be found in Sant Julià de Lòria, of which is about 40 minutes away by car.
