Venezuelan capital, Caracas is located in the north country near the Caribbean Sea.
The city is located about 900 m above sea level in a long valley that narrows from east to west. On one side of the valley slopes of emerald are uninhabited, the Avila National Park, on the other hand, the rugged hills and barely furnished the southern suburbs. Slopes of the park dominates the city like a huge green wave.
The city was founded in 1567 by Spanish explorer Diego de Losada, the name Santiago de Leon de Caracas.
In 2006, it had a population of 1.9 million inhabitants in the city and 5.5 million in the metropolitan area.
City architecture is a blend of modern and classic. Many colonial buildings have been replaced by skyscrapers, but tourists can meet between the shadows of the past and modern jewelry. Most of the cultural and architectural heritage can be found near the Bolivar Square, downtown.
Caracas is a delight for shopping lovers. In shopping malls, markets or bazaars tourists find imported goods, clothing, footwear, gems and jewelry, wood carvings, pottery, baskets and original hammock palm fiber and cotton.
Caracas is one of the most developed cities in South America and an important economic center in the region.
