Channel Islands or the Channel Islands are a group of islands in the English Channel between England and France. The islands are grouped into two provinces (bailiwicks), Guernsey and Jersey, both British crown dependency, but not parts of the United Kingdom nor the European Union. The total population is approximately 160,000 inhabitants.
Inhabited Channel Islands are Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm (the main islands), Jethou, Brecqhou (Brechou), and Lihou. All except the island of Jersey are in the Bailiwick of Guernsey's. Uninhabited Islands Minquiers, Ecréhous Les Pierres of Lecq Dirouilles and are part of the Bailiwick of Jersey's and Casquets Burhou and off the island of Alderney is. As a general rule, larger islands have a suffix-ul-ey and the smaller suffix-hou, who is believed to come from Old Norse language holmr ey respectively.
Channel Islands are part of the territories annexed by the Duchy of Normandy in 933 in the Duchy of Brittany. William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, claimed the title of King of England in 1066 and has secured claim by the Norman conquest of England. Following the subsequent conflict between the King of England and King of France, the latter withdrew the first title of Duke of Normandy in 1204, but the Channel Islands remained loyal to him. British monarchs have retaliation, claiming the title of King of France, claims to have dropped in 1801. At any one time there was no question that the channel islands to become part of the Kingdom of England or form a union like that of Scotland or Ireland with the UK. So feudal responsibilities Duke remained nominal charge, even after the King of England gave up the title.
After the English Revolution, with the restoration of Charles II Stuart who has spent his exile in Jersey, Channel Islands received additional privileges including the power to impose their own duties.
Channel Islands were the only British territory occupied by Germany during the Second World War, between 1 July 1940 and May 9, 1945
