Israel is a parliamentary republic located in the Middle East along the eastern shore of the Mediterranean. It borders with Lebanon in the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan and the West Bank in the east, Egypt and the Gaza Strip.
Modern Israel is roughly located on the territory of the ancient Jewish kingdoms that are the birthplace of Judaism, Christianity and contains holy places for all the main monotheistic religions in the world.
Israel also called the Holy Land is the territory in which the biblical events, described by Tanakh, the Old Testament, the New Testament, or the Koran, took place.
A land of promise, faith, and conflict for its possession, today's Israel reveals itself to the traveler as a place of great spiritual burden. For the Jews, the most holy cities are Jerusalem, Safed and Tiberias. For Christians, the most important cities are Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth. Muslims consider the entire territory west of the Jordan River to be sacred, and Jerusalem is considered a sanctuary.
