Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca, the holy city of Islam, which Muslims are required to visit at least once in their life. Everything here is reached and to Medina, the second holiest place in Islam.
Jeddah is the most cosmopolitan and tolerant of all the cities of Saudi Arabia, hosting expatriates worldwide. It's also the second commercial center in the Middle East, after Dubai.
During the oil boom of the late '70s and '80s, there was a focused civic effort to bring art into public areas of the city of Jeddah. As a result, Jeddah contains a large number of modern open air sculptures and works of art, mostly located in the roundabouts, making the city one of the largest outdoor art galleries in the world. The city also has many museums and historic buildings with traditional models, some located near the beach.
