Outstanding Ukrainian capital Kiev (or Kyiv) is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe and its wealth increased and decreased along with the exchange's history. It is believed that the city, once capital of the old Russian (region of origin countries of today Russia, Ukraine and Belarus), dates from the fifth century and played a leading role in the expansion of the eastern Slavic people, and he served as a major center of trade between the Mediterranean and the Baltic.
By the 1200s, Kiev was one of the largest cities in the world, but had lost after invasion of Mongolia in 1240, recovering and really only in the nineteenth century, during the Russian Revolution. Much of the city and its treasures were again damaged during the the Second World War, but Kiev still has a rich cultural heritage and a series of spectacular attractions.
An abundance of museums, theaters, opera houses, historical buildings and gardens are found on each of the two sides of the river Dnepr. The west bank of hosting the oldest city and was, before urbanization, characterized by forested hills, and the steep gorges and winding rivers that serve as a rink in the summer. Guarded by a statue of the historic protector of Kiev, Archangel Michael, the city also boasts a successful harmony between old and new. Modern buildings are nestled near the priceless historical items and cultural wonders are found side by side with noisy night clubs, bars and restaurants.
