About Kranjska Gora - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Kranjska Gora - a resort for families!
The resort of Kranjska Gora, with its 1,403 residents, is located near the Triglav National Park, surrounded by mountains and glacial lakes. The alpine holiday resort in the Northwest of Slovenia is known as a relaxation and winter sports resort. Even though Slovenia is becoming more and more attractive to winter sports fans, the traditional charm of the country has not disappeared. This is in part due to the Nordic Centre Planica, where ski jumping and flying as well as cross-country training and competitions take place based on Slovenian tradition. Eight ski jumping hills can be found in the Nordic Centre Planica in Kranjska Gora.
Cross-country fans will certainly get their money's worth in summer as much as in winter: in winter, the outdoor cross-country trails are utilised and in summer, the fun continues in the covered cross-country polygon. Those who are still active in the evening will find an illuminated night slalom obstacle course available to enjoy.
SkiThe Kranjska Gora ski area, with its 20 km of piste, belongs to the five largest and best-rated ski areas in Slovenia. The family-friendly ski area can be reached via three access points and has over six chair lifts and 13 tow lifts.
The Nordic Centre Planica has a tow lift with practice piste and is perfect for beginners. Those who are looking for something steeper after spending time on the practice piste should start in Kranjska Gora, as there is an easy run that heads back down into the valley. Alternatively, when heading out from Podkoren on the chair lift, you can also find red and black pistes. There's really something for winter sports fans of all skill levels here.
The accommodations in Kranjska Gora are located very close to the pistes, which is another great advantage for families.
Slovenia, and Kranjska Gora in particular, provide numerous possibilities for activities. You could, for example, go ice climbing along the frozen Lucifer Waterfall in the Martuljek forest. Snow Biking is also quite popular in Slovenia. Here, previous knowledge is not important as the snow bike itself is very stable and safe. Jasna Lake also has a natural skating rink in the winter. Furthermore, there are 100 km of winter hiking trails available to discover during the winter.
In the Upper Sava Valley, there are several trails available for ski tour enthusiasts. For beginners, the routes from the peaks of the Karawanks would be recommended, whereas advanced ski tour enthusiasts could consider taking on the ridges of the Julian Alps. The most popular routes are the "Mojstrovka", "Kotovo sedlo" and "Za Cmirom".
In the evenings, you can spend some time along an torch-lit toboggan run around Kranjska Gora, enjoy a snowshoe hike under the light of the full moon, or visit a small market on the slope with illuminated cottages, culinary delights, and handmade products.
40 km of carefully prepared cross-country trails are available to enjoy in Kranjska Gora. The trails run along the source of the Sava Dolinka and the ski jumping hill in Planica, and continue on into the Tamar Valley and Gozd Martuljek. Further cross-country opportunities can be found in Mojstrana and in Zgornja Radovna. Those who are looking to push themselves a bit more should check out the trail from Rateče to Tamar with an ascent of 260 m in altitude. You also have the chance to continue cross-country skiing in Kranjska Gora in the evenings along an illuminated meadow.
