About Kuala Lumpur - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
City name means "muddy capital" in Malaysia, named due to location at the confluence of Klang and Gombak.
Kuala Lumpur is located in the heart of Selangor state. It is bordered by mountains on all sides, except in the east, this being the reason for Kuala Lumpur and surrounding areas are called "Klang Valley".
Kuala Lumpur is the seat of Federal Parliament in Malaysia. The city center was once the residence of the executive and judicial powers of the federation, but they have moved to Putrajaya starting in 1999. The city is also the cultural and economic center in Malaysia, due to its capital position, and being a first class city.
Since 1990, the city has hosted many international sports competitions, cultural and political events including the 1998 Commonwealth Games and Formula One World Championship. It is a modern city, full of anxiety, with over one million inhabitants. KL stands for the country's citizens use. At first glance one may say that is a modern Asian city, with impressive skyscrapers.
Over the past decades, Kuala Lumpur has become a thriving metropolis with spectacular buildings and Petronas Towers (second highest, in the world) and large shopping centers. The towers are linked on levels 41 and 42 by a suspension bridge. It is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 until 17:00.
At the towers is a shopping mall, with shops and several brand attractions such as the Discovery Center and Petrosains Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Unlike other Asian cities, Kuala Lumpur still has historical buildings, patches of nature and cultural heritage.
Today the city landscape is a mix of modernity and traditional charm. Ambulant vendors stalls and shops before the war as they compete with the skyscrapers and sophisticated buildings.
Another attraction is situated at an altitude of telecommunications tower KL. With a unique design, the tower resembles a giant children's toy rattles, the 421m. Tower has an observation deck that offers a 360 degree panorama of the city and a restaurant where you can enjoy lunch or dinner. But you must make reservations in advance.
Other sights include Jamek Mosque at the confluence of Klang and Gombak rivers, National Mosque, Temples and Sri Mahamariaman Thean Hou. In a mosque visitors are asked to cover body parts at the view with a robe.
Near the center of town is Bukit nanas Forest Reserve, a sanctuary of 10.5 hectares of natural jungle with birds and wildlife and trails for visitors. Lake Gardens has several major attractions: the National Monument, Bird Park, Orchid Garden, Hibiscus Garden, deer and butterfly parks and the National Planetarium.
Kuala Lumpur is turning into a city of museums, with plenty of curious visitors. National Museum contains artifacts and occasional exhibitions.
The most popular day trip from Kuala Lumpur is organized by the limestone Batu Caves. This is a short distance north of the city and to reach the main cave will have to climb 272 steps. Hindu pilgrims come here every year during Thaipusam festival.
