Langkawi (Jawi: لانكاوي), officially known as Langkawi, Jewel of Kedah (Malay: Langkawi Kedah Pillow) is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, about 30 km off the northwestern coast of mainland Malaysia. The islands are a part of Kedah state, adjacent Thai border.
On July 15, 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah has consented to the change of name in Langkawi Kedah Pillow with Golden Jubilee celebration. At sea on the island, lies its homonym, Pulau Langkawi with a population of about 64,792 inhabitants, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba. Langkawi is also an administrative district of Kuah town, the capital and largest city. Langkawi is a duty free island.
Langkawi the Malay language, means reddish brown eagle. Malay word for eagle is helang - shortened is "lang" and Kawi is reddish brown.
Langkawi is a group of 99 islands separated from mainland Malaysia through the Strait of Malacca, is a district of Kedah state in northern Malaysia and lies approximately 51 km west of Kedah. Islands area is 47,848 ha, while the main island of Langkawi itself has a total of 32,000 hectares. The main islands stretch for about 25km. Coastal areas consist of flat plains, alluvial, dotted with limestone increases. Two thirds of the island is dominated by mountains covered with forests, hills and natural vegetation.
The climate is tropical, with an average annual temperature of about 32 ° C. The rainy season is from August to September, although there is occasional rainfall throughout the year.
The economy is based on the crops of rice and rubber, but also the fishing. Three main areas of preservation are in Langkawi Geopark Park Geoforest Machincang Cambrian Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest and Park (Island Lake Mary). These three parks are the most popular tourist areas in Langkawi Geopark.
