Leeds, the third largest city in England, United Kingdom of Great Britain (after London and Birmingham), is the largest town in West Yorkshire in northern England. The town lies on the banks of the River Aire and is considered to be the capital of northern England. Leeds metropolitan area is part of the same name.
The city was an important trade fair in the Middle Ages, first mentioned in documents dating from 1207. In the Tudor period Leeds was mainly a commercial city where wool coats. Link to other European cities was through the Humber estuary. At one point nearly half of the total export passed through Leeds England. City's economic development has seen a rapid growth with the opening of Leeds Liverpool Canal in 1816 and the railway in 1848.
In Leeds there are several museums, the most important probably being the Royal Armouries museum opened in 1996 armor, when collections were transferred from the Tower of London museum. Other museums: Museum Museum of Leeds, Thackray medical museum's Medical Museum and Art Gallery City Art Gallery.
Leeds also have their headquarters and several major theaters: Grand Theatre, Opera North, City Varieties (which has hosted performances of Charlie Chaplin, Harry Houdini), West Yorkshire Playhouse.

As a consequence of the large number of students in Leeds there are many bars and clubs and places for holding live concerts. Leeds won a well-deserved reputation favorite destination for clubs and discos. Often described as the city is the second in this regard in the UK capital is surpassed only by London.
