Liverpool is a city and the Metropolitan County Metropolitan Burg Merseyside North West England region. English is one of the major cities, metropolitan area with 800,000 inhabitants. In the nineteenth century Liverpool was considered the second port of the British Empire after London.
The old port town of Liverpool was inscribed in 2004 on the UNESCO world cultural heritage list.
In 2008, the city was European Capital of Culture along with Stavanger in Norway.
Liverpool has over 2,500 historic buildings, protected by law, of which 26 are Grade I as important, and 85 are Grade II. The city contains the largest number of sculptures from around England, with Westminster and that number more than buildings, after London.
Liverpool is a diverse city with many beautiful Georgian buildings, the oldest Chinatown in Europe, some impressive Victorian buildings and many world class attractions. The restored Albert Docks in 1980 are now among the most popular attractions in Liverpool, with restaurants, bars, shops and museums, including the Merseyside Maritime Museum and Tate Liverpool. The city attracts fans of the Beatles, the International Beatles Week, a week in August dedicated to the band, and several museums.
