About Maastricht - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Maastricht is a city in the Netherlands, the capital of the province of Limburg. The city is on both sides of the Meuse River in the southeastern part of the country, between Belgium and Germany.
The name of the city derives from the Latin name Mosae Traiectum (passing over Meuse), referring to the bridge made by the Romans under the leadership of Octavian August.
In the south of the city is the "mountain" St. Pietersberg which contains an old fort and a network of caves. In the caves, a constant temperature of 10 ° C is maintained, a suitable environment for hibernating bats.
The Maastricht has a short train connection with the city of Liège in Belgium and to the north one with the city of Eindhoven.
Maastricht is the birthplace of the EU, the Treaty of Maastricht was signed here in 1992, after which the euro was born and three EU pillars were created.
It is the oldest city in the Netherlands where you can still see the Roman remains in the ruins that are still found sometimes or especially in the catacombs.
