Makati City is one of 16 cities that comprise Metro Manila region, one of the most populated metropolitan regions in the world. Makati is the financial center of the Philippines and one of the major financial centers, shopping econmice and Asia. As host to many embassies, is also an important business center.
With a population of 510,383 people, is the 16th-century town square in the Philippines and the 40th in the world with 18,654 inhabitants per square kilometer. Makati is noted for its highly cosmopolitan culture, also being an important cultural center in Metro Manila. The city is home to many first-class shopping malls and tall towers, located in Ayala Center and Rockwell Center.
The city was found by Spaniard Miguel López de Legazpi who ranked as a swamp area with no value. According to folklore, Legazpi asked the indigenous name for the area but due to language barriers, questions and answers were misinterpreted. It is said that the natives answered "Makati, kumakati na," translated means "the tidal bore" and so the name remained Makati.
Makati became the country's financial center in the early '5. Many areas of the city districts and have become very popular in other countries. Many world-class research univeristati are located in Makati.
