Odessa is an important cultural and educational center. They are university, founded in 1865, and the number of other institutions of higher education. The southern coast in the harbor is a popular area, with numerous sanatoriums and holiday tables.
The history of the modern city began in the 14th century, when it was performed in front in the section of Khadzhibey, in the past in Lithuania-Poland and in 1480 in Turkey. The fortress was attacked by the Russians in 1789, and again ceded to Russia in 1792. The new fortress was built in 1792–93, and in 1794 added a large naval and commercial pier. In 1795 the new port was named Odessa for the ancient Greek colony Odessos.
