Playa del Carmen is a spa resort town in the northeastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo, south of Cancun on the Caribbean coast. At the 2005 census, the city had a population of 100,383 inhabitants and it develops very quickly. Playa del Carmen is the 3rd largest city in the state of Quintana Roo, after Cancún and Chetumal.
The city is named after the title "Our Lady of Mount Caramel", the title given to Mary as the patron saint of the inhabitants of the area that today regiunii.Primii became Playa del Carmen Mayan civilization dates back to the period. Coastal area and surrounding lands were still inhabited when the Spaniards arrived here.
Originally being a small fishing town, tourism in Playa del Carmen has grown with the advent of ferries carrying tourists to the island Cozumel. Moving on here, many people realized that the place is ideal to relax and escape the crowds of Cancun, also benefited from the same quality beaches and turquoise water of the same. While Playa del Carmen Cozumel island could not compete in terms of scuba diving, adventurous tourists were attracted here by the hollow filled with fresh water Cenote called. The beach is also a stop for many cruise ships transiting the area and anchor in the harbor about 10 km from the city. Xcaret Eco Park, an eco-archaeological theme park, is another attraction for tourists who visit the area.
Local community and government have tried to keep the city's reputation as one of the small fisherman's town, wanting to avoid its transformation into a metropolis like Mexico.
