About Quebec City - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
The city of Québec is the capital of the Canadian province of the same name. It is the second demographic city after Montreal. It is located on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River, close to the confluence with the St. Charles River. The Laurentian Mountains extend to the north of the city. The city is at the confluence of several climatic regions, but in general the climate is temperate-continental, with four seasons.
The metropolis is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. It was founded in 1608 by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain, and throughout its existence, it has often served as the capital - either of French Canada, Lower Canada or the Province of Quebec. Currently, it is the residence of the administrative region of the National Capital.
The cranes that surround the old city - Vieux-Québec - are the only fortified walls still extending north of Mexico. In 1985, this area was declared a historical site by UNESCO.
The city is a major cultural center of the Francophonie. French is spoken by 94.55% of the population, while English is spoken by only 1.46%.
There are numerous annual festivals here, such as the Summer Festival and the Winter Carnival. The most famous landmark is Château Frontenac, an impressive hotel. Vieux-Québec hosts, among others, the National Assembly of Quebec - the provincial legislative body, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Quebec and the Museum of Civilization (Musée de la civilization).
Most jobs in Quebec are concentrated in the areas of public administration, defense, services, trade, transportation and tourism. Being a provincial capital, the city offers many benefits. For example, the provincial government is the largest employer, providing approximately 27,900 jobs in 2007. Here the big companies have their headquarters, perhaps due to the fact that the security and defense industries are developed.
Tourist attractions in the Quebec area include the Montmorency Waterfall, the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica, the Mont-Sainte-Anne Ski Resort and an ice hotel. The Jardin zoologique du Québec, the zoo, was reopened in 2002 after two years of restoration, but in 2006 it was closed following a political decision. It housed 750 species. The Aquarium du Québec has over 10,000 species of mammals, reptiles, fish and other ocean species.
Among the attractions are numerous historical sites, art galleries and museums, among which the citadel of Quebec, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Ursuline Monastery and the Musée de la civilization are worth mentioning.
The city has hosted numerous sporting events, including the Canada Special Olympics and the IIDH World Championship (next to Halifax), both in 2008. Quebec has a professional baseball, football and basketball team. In the past, he also had an ice hockey team.
Quebec has many universities and colleges, including: Université Laval, Canada's oldest educational center, Université du Québec, a system of ten public universities, Collège François-Xavier-Garneau and private institutions such as Collège Notre-Dame-de -Foy, Mérici College, Bart College.
There are two bridges - the Quebec Bridge and the Pierre Laporte Bridge - that connect the city to the southern shore of St. Lawrence River and a ferry service connecting Quebec to Orleans. The city has a large network of provincial roads and highways.
In January 2002, 12 former cities were annexed to it. Since then, the city has changed its structure several times, reaching in 2011 to have 35 districts divided into six large areas.
