Rzeszow has been a welcoming city for visitors for almost 700 years. The earliest written records date back to 1354, when the medieval city of Resovia received civil rights. Since then, it has been a meeting point of many European nations from the eastern Byzantine and western Mediterranean and people from southern and northern Europe. Rzeszow is an excellent example of how a modern, young and dynamic growing city of 163,000 people is positioned in its historical heritage. The city is the basis of local administrations and administrative authorities and has a university and a university of technology.
The central station of the city connects with all the important cities of Poland. The Industrial Park for Advanced Science and Advanced Technologies of the Lower Carpathians, specializing in new technologies, is located in Rzeszów, along with a number of state universities. These include the University of Rzeszów (with 12 departments), the University for Technology in Rzeszów, as well as several private universities, the University of Management and Information Technology being one of the largest private universities in Poland. The city has 3 honorary consulates (Germany, Slovakia and Ukraine), being a member of the Polish Metropolitan Union and the Eurocities Association - an association of cities throughout Europe. Former residence of the Polish nobility.
In 1991, Pope John Paul II visited Rzeszów. During the festivities, attended by almost 1,000,000 people, the Pope beatified the priest Józef Sebastian Pelczar, former priest of Przemyśl. On March 25, 1992, Pope John Paul II established the new Diocese of Rzeszów. The city of Rzeszów becomes the administrative center of the new Diocese and the Church of the Holy Heart becomes the new cathedral of the city.
