About Szklarska Poreba - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Szklarska Poręba - gigantic winter fun in the Giant Mountains!
Szklarska Poręba (Schreiberhau) lays in the river bed of the Zacken, between the Eastern extension of the Jizera Mountains and the north face of the Giant Mountains, at an altitude of up to 886 m. This picturesque place on earth is know today as one of the most important tourism centres in the Polish part of this massif. Not only poets an writers let themselves be inspired by this wonderful natural landscape, also winter hikers will find what they are looking for. Let yourself be transported up the mountain to the 1,326 m high peak of the Reifträger by the double chair lift, and go on a hike to the fascinating snow caverns, look out for the source of the Elbe River and possibly even cross over the border to the Czech Republic.
Szklarska Poręba offers ideal conditions for active winter sports, thanks to it's good location and high likeliness of snow. Even back in the first half of the 19th century there was a 7 km long toboggan run down into the valley. Up the mountain you had to go by horse. Every winter many tourists come to the resort, as the ski area at the Reifträger (Szrenica) also has some artificially snowed pistes and is known as one of the most attractive ski areas in whole Eastern Europe.
SkiOne of the most attractive and most popular ski areas in Poland is to be found in Sklarska Poreba (Schreiberhau). Although the resort and ski area are located not nearly as high as other European ski areas (peak of the Reifträger approx. 1,362 m altitude) the special micro climate provides snow conditions comparable to the Alps. The ski area is divided into two sections. Closer to the resort are the easier and less challenging pistes to be found, which are ideal for families with children. In total the ski area around the mountain offers approx. 15 km of pistes with easy to intermediate difficulty. The longest descent, the Lolobrygida (4,400 m) covers a difference in altitude of 637 m. The area around Sklarska Poreba is also perfect for cross-country skiers.
In the closer surroundings of the valley station there are some pubs, which are good choice for receiving a tasty meal and some drinks for a good price. On resort there are various options to take par in Polish apres ski. This is however, hardly comparable to the Austrian version. People rather get together in the evening to relax and end the day easily. In the local pubs and discos however you can really get going on international music hits, which however are mostly translated into Polish. Apres ski on new level.
Beside loads of fun on the piste, the area also offers one of the best cross-country areas. In the Jacob Valley (Jakuszyce), a district of Sklarska Poreba lays one of the best cross-country networks in Poland. On approx. 100 km of prepared tracks and of varying difficulties can beginners and pros alike skate and ski to their heart's desire. The perfectly connected trails are designed in the curvy image of a clover leaf. Professionals and hobby sports enthusiasts can both be found here and thanks to the ideal climatic conditions and the really well-prepared trails the World Cup 2012 in classic cross-country style even took place here.
