About Toronto On - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Toronto is Ontario on the north bank of the river, the lake city image is unmistakable: CN Tower is the tallest in the world. Around it is a collection of skyscrapers, which leaves space for residential areas, parks and green spaces.
The capital of Ontario, Toronto is Canada's largest city and fifth largest in North America. A dominant force in business and economy, Toronto is Canada's Anglophone and cultural center.
Initially claimed by the French in the eighteenth century, only during the American Revolution groups of loyal United Empire fled to Toronto. Then known as York, the city had a predominantly British, working as the administrative center of English Canada. In 1834, the city was renamed Toronto, a Huron Indian word meaning "meeting place".
Toronto nineteenth and twentieth centuries was a law-abiding city, where rules were made, which were rarely broken and where the main concern was making money. As a result, Toronto has earned a reputation as the enclave of Protestantism. Older residents still remember the days when work was stopped in town every Sunday, and few restaurants served wine.
In the late 1950s a new wave of city imgranti brought new foods, new idioms, and, most importantly, new attitudes. Italians, Portuguese and Eastern Europeans were the first to come, will immigrants from the Caribbean, Asia and India. They were established in places that would become the city's great ethnic neighborhoods - Greek Quarter, Little Italy and Chinatown.
Toronto has increasingly become a multi-ethnic society, the shell is dezbacandu-colonial and even retains some vestiges of the English pubs and clubs conservative habit of toast in the Queen before eating.
And the architecture of the city is apparent overlap - at first glance the city seems to be very different from any other large American city, but a closer look you can see buildings in Victorian and Edwardian.
Toronto today is a lively and cultural place, with hot summers and cold winters. This is the most important city in Canada in terms of economics, a center of finance, media services and hosts more than any other city corporations.
At night, residents have access to the restaurants, bars and clubs, opera houses and theaters. Above all, however, the city is characterized by the locals - friendly, efficient and multi-cultural.
