About Utrecht - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Utrecht is in the center of the country and province of the same name. Utrecht was built on the Rhine, which changed its course. The old course of the river is currently used by two smaller rivers: Kromme Rijn (Straight Rhine) and Oude Rijn (Old Rhine).
The Straight Rhine enters the city through the east and flows into Utrechtse Vecht and Leidse Rijn. To the west is the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal; in the south is another older and smaller canal called Vaartse Rijn.
Utrecht has about 300,000 inhabitants, the urban area has 610,000 inhabitants. It is the fourth city in the Netherlands by inhabitants and is part of a collaborative project called G4, together with Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. Utrecht is growing very fast: in May 2008, the city had 296,000 inhabitants; in 2017, an estimated 350,000 inhabitants and in 2022 - 370,000 inhabitants. By 2025, the city's population will grow by 36%.
The city is multicultural: one in three inhabitants is of foreign origin. It is expected that this number will remain stable in the future, although it has been estimated in 2010, the foreign population has exceeded 100,000. In Utrecht there are many known places due to the number of immigrants, such as Kanaalstraat in Lombok and Amsterdamsestraatweg, the main street in the northwest.
