The town is famous because of the Battle of Waterloo, which took place here on June 18, 1815, and opposed the Napoleonic armies of Bonaparte by an Anglo-Prussian coalition, a battle which resulted in the definitive defeat of Napoleon. The village was agricultural. According to some data from 1819 it seems that the lands knew the alternative culture spread over four years. At the same time there was a windmill, two breweries and a distillery in Waterloo. In 1838 a sugar factory and a chemical factory were set up. In 1896 there were five more soaps, a weaving mill, three haberdashery workshops, a canvas printing workshop, five masonry enterprises. In 1970, out of the 17,764 inhabitants of the commune, 4,217 were workers in the industry. At Waterloo is Butte du Lion, with a peak in time, built in honor of the 1815 battle.
WATERLOO | Waterloo is a Francophone municipality in the Walloon region of Belgium. The total area of the commune is 21.03 km². As of January 1, 2008, the commune had a total population of 29,448 inhabitants.
