Železná Ruda – Unspoilt nature in the Bohemian Forest!
Železná Ruda (meaning "ironstone market") is located at 820 m altitude, just approx. 3 km from Bayerisch Eisenstein on the German border and is one of the central points for sport and tourism in Bohemian Forest. The name of the town stems from when it was founded, on a trading route close to an iron ore mine between Bohemia and Bavaria. As the area is very rich in raw materials, since the Middle Ages there have been many iron and glass workshops, which up until the middle of the 20th century provided work for lots of the residents. However today tourism plays a much greater role. In summer the region invites you on hikes and bike rides around the lakes and mountain peaks, whilst in winter it bustles with sport-lovers on the extensive cross-country trails and in the family-friendly ski areas. Should the weather keep you from enjoying the nature, you can learn about the history or the special features of the region in the diverse museums (e.g. the brewery museum or the motorcycle exhibition).
SkiThe most important ski area in the Bohemian Forest is Špičák. At an altitude of up to 1,202 m, you have access to approx. 8.5 km of piste. From gentle practice slopes for beginners to intermediate pistes for the more advanced and demanding black descents for those looking for a challenge, there is something for everyone here. Children can enjoy their first attempts at skiing with skiing lessons on the suitable gentle slopes in the Pinguinland area. The "K2 Snowpark" awaits snowboarder and freestylers and offers varied and perfectly prepared obstacles of all difficulty levels. Three times a week the Lubska-Piste is lit up and you can then live it up in the snow until 9 pm.
If that’s not enough you should try out the pistes at nearby Pancíř (1,213 m), Belveder (900 m) or Hojsova Stráž (900 m). Approx. 10 km away on the German side you will find the Großer Arber ski area which offers a total of 15 km of piste at an altitude of 1,456 m.
At the Špičák valley station you’ll find several huts-at particularly low price- which invite you to stop by after a day’s skiing. Directly in Železná Ruda there are various bars, discos and arcades, which are particularly popular amongst Czech guests.
Alongside skiing, you also have the opportunity of toboggan rides or winter hikes, where you can enjoy the peace in the snow-covered forests of the natural park away from the hustle and bustle of the pistes.
The various ski regions around Železná Ruda (Špičák, Belveder, Hojsova Stráž) offer a total of approx. 100 km of machine-prepared cross-country trails amidst unique natural surroundings. On various tours the cross-country trails can be linked together. Excursions to the German side are also possible. You’ll find many more km of trails at e.g. Areal Bayerisch Eisenstein, Bretterschachten and Zwieslerwald. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate, wallower or winter-sport fan, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth here!
