Hunyadi Castle is a historic monument and the oldest building in Timisoara, built between 1443 - 1447 by John Hunyadi, the ruins of an ancient castle in the fourteenth century (built during the reign of King Charles I of Anjou).
Following the establishment on July 25, 1872 History and Archaeology Society Banat were founded Banat Museum. The first objects of wealth, which came into its inventory was stored at first in a room in the Palace of Cenad Diocese. Museum objects from the donations, chance archaeological discoveries and acquisitions.

In 1876, with support from Timis county prefect, the Society of History and Archaeology of Banat had two rooms in the house Wellauer, the Stade Lonovics, head of the museum until the interwar period.

The current one has to look at 1900. The main facade was designed in the romantic style, with Gothic arch windows finished what took the place of places for artillery. The tower is rectangular, low height, with small windows and finished with battlements, to emphasize the importance of the old military. The main entrance is marked by two massive pillars that were in the top two knight's armor, emphasizing the building's Gothic appearance.

Today, the castle was reclaimed cultural, settling here in 1947 established the Museum of Banat and housing departments of history and natural sciences.
