Basilica of Bom Jesus - details and images
"Bom Jesus" is the name used for the baby Jesus. Minor Basilica is the first Jesuit church in India and is considered one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in India.
The construction of the church began in 1594, the church was consecrated in May 1605 by Archbishop Dom Fr. Aleixo de Menezes. This has emerged as a world heritage landmark in the history of Christianity. It contains the body of St. Francis Xavier, a close friend of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Francis Xavier died on the way to Sancian island to mainland China (2 December 1552).
Basilica of Bom Jesus has more than 400 years and is open to the public daily. The body of St. Francis Xavier is kept in a beautifully decorated coffin. Jobs solemn of the "body of St. Francis Xavier" occur every ten years.
