Christ of the Abyss - details and images
Il Cristo degli Abissi is an underwater monument in memory of the dead in the sea. The arms of Christ, ideally directed toward God in heaven, are opened as a sign of peace.
The statue representing Jesus is made of bronze has a weight of about 260kg, a height of 2.5m and is at a depth of 17m in the natural marine area protected by Portofino.
The statue was made by the artist Guido Galleti in 1954 in honor of Duilio Marcante dead while sinking on the bottom of the Bay of San Fruttuoso, between Camogli and Portofino.
Every year, on the last Sunday in July, a ceremony takes place in the memory of all those who have lost their lives in the water. The religious ceremony is held on the shore at night, and the divers descend into the sea to Christ and put on a crown of laurels.
Tourists can sink to see the statue, it is one of the most famous excursions on the coast of Liguria.
Throughout the years, Christ has become the symbol of passion for diving and sea. Diving is relatively simple and shallow and does not require special measures for the presence of escorts in the Ligurian region because it is located in the Portofino protected marine area.
