Cilicia Museum - details and images
A wonderful collection of religious and cultural artifacts from the museum Armenian Cilicia is one of the best kept secrets in Beirut. Secrecy plays an important role in the history of this museum, much of the collection was taken in secret by the monks of the monastery of Sis in Cilicia in the so called Turkish Armenia in 1915.
With only a few days to to escape the genocide against the Turks, how could the monks have taken the treasure and went along the shore road to seeking refuge Allepo possibly in Syria. Eventually they settled in Antelias, north of Beirut, in 1930. The museum tries to be not only a collection of artifacts due to attraction and part of Armenian history, but also shows how the history of Armenia was formed. They say that every object in the museum was an eyewitness to the Armenian history writing.
The museum is located at Armenian Cilicia Catholicosate of Cilicia in Antelias. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, between 10-17 and 10-13 on Sunday. Admission is free.
