Corfu Old Fortress - details and images
The most important attraction of the island is certainly old city, Palaio Frourio ("Old Fortress", in literal translation), located in the extreme east of Corfu town on a rocky peninsula surrounded by fortified walls which, in some areas fell into the sea because of erosion.
Fortress began to be inhabited since the sixth century, after the city was devastated, and was turned into a military zone.
The interior was renovated fortress here now taking place in several cultural events through which recreated the atmosphere of past historical events. The highest point of an obelisk is the natural fortress, on top of which is a military observer and a cross. The observer is the St. George Church, whose classic style building is distinguished by six Doric columns.
