Sculptures, architectural elements, frescoes, icons, documents, historical artifacts, paintings, portraits and more illustrating the evolution of Cretan civilization, from early Christian times until the 20th century are housed in 12 rooms of the museum.

All exhibits are organized in chronological order. On the first floor, one room is dedicated to the great Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis, exposing different manuscripts, letters and several personal items. Another part of the museum is dedicated to the Battle of Crete and displaying a collection of documents, portraits, weapons of war. On the second floor an entire room was transformed into a traditional Cretan house, "kamarospito" (the word "Kamares", which means arcade, a basic element in every house of this style), which is typical of all furniture and decorations and a workshop with full equipment of tissue.
