Horta Museum - details and images

Horta Museum, Brussels is not a traditional museum, in the true meaning of the word - a building where all objects exposed to attract attention. The Horta Museum is a little backwards: it is the museum building itself. Horta Museum was actually the house that Victor Horta built it for himself in the late 1890s. It is an excellent example of architectural style that made Horta one of the most acclaimed architects in Belgium.

Art Nouveau style was very popular in Europe, and especially in Brussels between 1893 and 1918. Its characteristics are the use of industrial materials such as iron and steel in the visible parts of buildings and decorations inspired by nature or decorative mosaics on building facades. Many of these Characteristics may be found in Horta Museum building. In this house you can see one of the great innovations of Horta: the rooms are built around a central hall. The glass ceiling light comes home and gives the building a lot more natural light than with traditional houses from the late 19th century in Brussels and Belgium.

This style has many names depending on the country: Jungenstil in Germanic countries, liberty style or modern style in Britain and Spain Modernist Estilo.

Victor Horta was born in 1861 in Ghent, Belgium. After studying in Paris, he settled in Brussels and continued to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1893 he built his first house in Art Nouveau style, Tassel family house, which still can be seen in Brussels, on Rue Emile Janson / Emiel Jansonstraat, at number six. Other important buildings followed: in 1894 the Solvay House (Horta's masterpiece), 1895 La Maison du Peuple (the house where the socialists were meeting in Brussels and has been demolished) Eetvelde Van House, 1898 Horta House (the building which today is Find museum), Les Grands Magasins Innovation 1901 (destroyed by fire in 1967 when over 300 people died), 1903 Les Magasins Waucquez (now a museum).

Visiting Horta Museum, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the life and work of Horta, who died in 1947. In addition to documents about his life, you can see art objects created by other artists Horta or epoch.
