Knossos - details and images
Knossos is an archaeological site located 5 km southeast of Heraklion, the capital of the island of Crete, which houses the ruins of an important settlement and a Minoan palace, discovered and restored between 1900-1931 by English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans. The reconstruction works were based on old palace images found on local Minoan frescoes.
All original pieces (frescoes, ceramics, religious worship, ornaments, etc.) are now found at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion (a museum that houses only parts of the island of Crete). At Knossos only copies are exhibited.
