Meteora is a monastic settlement, is the most important monastic center of Orthodox Greek territory, after Mount Athos.
Meteora is situated in the north-west of Thessaly Plain, near Kalambaka, leaving beautiful pine plains Tessaliana River and about 300 m above the valley. As a physical phenomenon is unique worldwide. This party arose because a cone-shaped delta consists of river stones and mud, which flows into Lake tessalic old. After separation geological massif of Olympus and the Osseor lake waters have found the Aegean Sea through the valley tembe. Then this massive delta-shaped stones and huge rocks split compact heights of up to 400 meters.
Currently there are 24 monasteries, some are in a state of ruin (the Holy Spirit, St. Demetrios, St. Nicholas Padua and others), while others are very well preserved, intact and functioning (the Great Meteor Varlam, Holy Trinity , Rusanou and others). Holy Meteora, for her Christian testimony, historical, architectural, artistic and geological generally is recognized as one that must be preserved and protected as a monument of humanity by UNESCO and by other international bodies.
On the highest plateau of the Meteora rocks, with an altitude of 613m, the monastery is the most representative of all the assembly, known as the Great Meteora, dedicated to the Transfiguration. The founder of this monastery was St. Athanasius of Meteora, came here from Mount Athos. He founded a small hermitage on a rock that turns into a Lavra in 1344, known until today.
The crown worn by the weather of a huge rock, sits the lowest hanging monastery on Mount Meteora Anapafsas called St. Nicholas, St. Nicholas Odihnitorul meaning.
Monastery of Saint Stephen is the oldest monastic settlement on Mount Meteora, was founded in 1192 by Jeremiah hermit.
Above a large solitary rocks very steep rise of the Holy Trinity Monastery. It was founded in 1438 by the hermit Dometie. The church was built in 1476, and the interior frescoes dating from 1741.
Access to the monastery (and the others) made the rope ladder or path net with a drum and pulley wheel.
