National Museum of Amsterdam - Rijksmuseum, the largest museum in the Netherlands - is housed in a historic building. When we refer to the size we consider the number of collections on display, the building itself, the budget and number of people working in this cultural institution. Every year, the museum receives over one million visitors.

Rijksmuseum is renowned for its exhibitions but also for special scholarships to encourage them to provide outstanding vision and rising artists.

The museum first opened in 1800 in The Hague. Then called the National Gallery of Art and hosted more than 200 paintings and historical objects. In 1808, the museum moved to Amsterdam's Dam Square Palace. The present building, a combination of Gothic and Renaissance style, is the headquarters museum in 1885. Masterpiece "Swan" by Jan Asselijn was the first acquisition of the museum.

In 2003 renovation work began at the museum, but visitors are allowed access to certain wings of the impressive buildings. Here is unveiled cream museum collections. Over 400 masterpieces are on display so bring out the greatness of political, economic and artistic Dutch Golden Age.

Among the guests favorite paintings include 18 works by Rembrandt, including the famous "The Night Watch" (1642), the most famous work is the greatest Flemish painter of all time, "milkmaid" by Johannes Vermeer's extraordinary landscapes Jacob van Ruisdael and simple stories, but it's great Jan Steen. But not even have to walk by the famous "The merry drinker" by Frans Hals, "Woman with a child in the pantry" by Pieter de Hooch and "Portrait of Elisabeth Bas", by Ferdinand Bol.

Every year more than one million people visit the Rijksmuseum. The museum has about 400 employees including 45 restaurants specializing in different areas of activity. Rijksmuseum is world renowned for its exhibitions but also for publications. These are the highest quality products in which the museum manages to expand the frontiers of knowledge and encourages exploration of knowledge accumulated by mankind to a wide variety of readers.

Museum allocate a substantial part of its financial resources for education and for decorating and arranging exhibitions. Top designers are frequently hired for various projects of the Rijksmuseum.
