Niagara Falls - details and images
Located in Ontario, stretching from the Great Lakes and up to Hudson Bay, Niagara Falls is the most famous tourist attraction in the country. Niagara, which was formed on the Niagara River that flows between the United States and Canada from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario is considered the continent's natural wonder. According to experts, Niagara Falls was formed 12,000 years ago, when the withdrawal of the glaciers to the north resulted in leakage of water from Lake Erie to Niagara slopes, a coastline that stretches from southern Ontario town to Rochester. Since then, erosion has pushed slightly waterfall about 11 km upstream, forming the Niagara Gorge.
The objective is divided into two parts of Goat Island. Greater part, of the left (Canadian), is called Horseshue Falls and has a height of 56 meters and the length of the ridge is about 670 meters. Other hand, American Falls, the right half has a height of 58 feet and crest length of only 320 meters. US-Canadian control over Niagara Falls during the time offered an example of international cooperation.
The huge flow of Niagara Falls, about 5.5 million liters per second, plus the steep slope to the river gives a great potential for tourism, bringing millions of visitors each year. Because of the strong drop of water forms a mist which, together with sunlight, giving rise to a large number of rainbows.
Tourists enjoy visiting the parks and viewing platforms. One of them, the Niagara Reservation State Park was established in 1885 and is the oldest park in the area.
It includes an observation tower, elevators that descend to the waterfall and where boat trips can be made to the American falls. Moreover, the waterfall can be seen in parks located on both sides of the river, from observation towers, from boats, from Goat Island and Rainbow Bridge, located a short distance downstream. Also, tourists can visit the Cave of Winds, located behind a curtain of water near the waterfall. At night, the waterfall is lit by powerful spotlights, colored, which gives tourists a unique spectacle of color and light. Each year, Niagara Falls is visited by 15 million tourists from all over the world.
