Poseidon Temple - details and images

The temple was built in the VI century in the year 444 on the ruins of an older building, from 490 and erected by the locals to honor the god of the seas and the waters. It is located at the top of Cape Sounion (Akra Sounion) and rises over 60 m from the Aegean Sea.
It was made up of a small church and a sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon.
The temple is built of marble, has 34 columns on which are engraved plates engraved with scenes of legend related to the god and the battle for the mastery of the Attic between Poseidon and Athenaeus of wisdom.
Currently due to the bad weather and the passage of time there are only 15 columns and 13 engraved plates.
