Riga Castle - details and images

A special attraction is the Castle (built in XIII century). Riga Castle was built in 1330 as the official residence of the Order of Livonia. It is very original, dressed in yellow, it was reconstructed several times throughout its history.

Currently serving as the official residence of the President of Latvia. Inside can also visit the Museum Latvian Museum of Foreign Art and Art History literature. It was strategically placed along the Daugava River in order to monitor all vessels entering the city.

Riga Castle, the most imposing buildings along the Daugava River in the city, surrounded by its own chapel and the chapel of St. Jekaba cathedral, the presidential office and also where they held official speeches from a balcony of the tower fancy flags. Riga Castle is the residence of the President of Latvia, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga.

After the city was occupied by Russia in the 18th century, the castle houses the administration of justice court of Riga and served as residence of Governor General. In 1922, the castle became the residence of the President of Latvia. After the Soviet occupation, the castle hosted the Council of People's Commissars of Latvia SSR between 1940-1941. In 1941, Young Pioneer organization of the Soviet Union moved to the north of the castle, which became known as Pioneer Castle. Several museums are housed in the south of the castle. After the independence of Latvia was restored and the north of the castle again became the residence of the President of Latvia.

Riga Castle (Rigas Pils) houses the Museum of History and Art Museum of Latvia's foreign.
