Roman Arena - Verona - details and images
Known as the Arena of Verona, the Roman Amphitheatre is the most famous landmark in Verona.
Built in the 1st century AD, the arena was used for gladiator battles, tournaments, tournament, but that market. Arena of Verona is one of the best preserved amphitheaters in the world (third after amphitheater in Rome, El Jem Tunisia).
As one of the largest buildings in the world arena can accommodate Romanian, currently, over 15,000 people at the same time. In ancient amphitheater could accommodate over 30,000 spectators but today it is only part of the original structure because of an earthquake in 1117 which partially destroyed the building (including the original facade of the building which was built of white and pink limestone from Valpolicella).
Since the eighteenth century, Romanian Arena was used for the staging of plays. Today it is home to various cultural activities such as opera, ballet and theater. Nowadays, four productions are mounted each year between June and August. During winter months, local opera and ballet companies perform at the Philharmonic Academy.
When there are concerts, Arena Romanian tourists can visit in the afternoon, a tax matter.
