Solomos Square - details and images
Dionisios Solomos Square is the central and largest market in the city and there are several religious and cultural events and holidays. Here the statue of our national poet, Dionisios Solomos, stands out, nowadays a copy of the original statue, the work of the Athenian sculptor Georgios Vroutos. Many impressive buildings are located around the market, such as the church of St. Nikolae, which was rebuilt in 1561, where St. Dionysius, the spiritual patron of the island, served, and it is remarkable that he survived the 1953 earthquake.
Other important buildings are the Byzantine Museum and Zakynthos Cultural Center, which houses the library, a gallery and many exhibits, along with the city cinema. At one time, the Square was also called the "Port Square", because it was formed by casting the area.
