Trajan's arch - Ancona - details and images

Arch of Trajan is a marble arch with a height of 18 meters, built in 114/115 in honor of Emperor Trajan. Arcade was built as part of an ambitious project to create a major port linking the Adriatic city of Ancona and other eastern Mediterranean.

Arch width of three meters is flanked by a pair of Corinthian columns on pedestals located. On the top is the inscription in letters of bronze, dedicated to Emperor Trajan that "made in Italy access vessels to be much safer with the construction of this port at his own expense -"... Quod ACCESSUM ITALIAE ETIAM ADDITO EX HOC U.S. port authorities TUTIOREM NAVIGANTIBUS pecuniary REDDIDERIT -

The format is like that of the Arcade building of Titus in Rome, but built taller, so that the bronze statues of Trajan's wife and the sister Marciana Plotinus be some landmarks for vessels approaching the biggest Adriatic port of Rome .

Arc is located right on the harbor wall, built on a high pedestal, with a base of travertine stone. Limited width of the wall only 11 feet at this point, made it necessary to create a tall structure, but narrow, so as to be clearly visible both on land and at sea.
