Tsutenkaku Tower - details and images
Total height is 103 m: on the main observation deck is located at a height of 91 m. The original tower, patterned after the Eiffel Tower was built in 1912, and was connected to the adjacent amusement park, Luna Park, with a cable. At the time of its construction, the height was 64 meters, making it the second highest structure in Asia.
It became one of the most popular locations in town, attracting visitors from around the area. The original structure suffered a fire in 1943 which damaged, and rather than deal with the compensation structure was dismantled and the steel used in war. After the war, citizens lobbied to rebuild the tower. A private company, Tsūtenkaku Kanko Co. Ltd. was founded and Tachū Naito, "Father Towers" Japan has been selected to design the tower. The new structure was opened in 1956.
On the fifth floor observation deck is kept piously Billiken or "The God of Happiness". Billiken, is a charming doll created by an American who came to Japan in 1910, was dedicated to Luna Park when it was opened.
Every year thousands of visitors put coins in the donation box and rub his feet for the wishes come true. The tower is also famous for its lights, which change every few years (they were stopped during the oil crisis of 1974-1976). Hitachi Tower sponsor since 1957.
