Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa with a population of 3,225,812 inhabitants in 2001, the capital of Gauteng Province. The city is nicknamed by locals as "Jo'burg", "Jozi" or "eGoli. Although Johannesburg is South Africa's capital, is headquarters
of the Constitutional Court, the highest court in the country. It is among the newest major cities of the world, and among the few major world cities that are not located at the coast or on the banks of the river Main.
With a population of nearly 8 million people in the metropolitan area, Johannesburg is among the top 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world.
