The spa and winter sports resort Lohberg is located in the nature park Oberer Bayerischer Wald, at the foot of the Osser and Arber mountains. With approx. 2,000 inhabitants the resort is the most eastern village in the Upper Pfalz. Due its diverse offer of trails, the area is known to be a true cross-country skiing paradise. But not only active winter sports possibilities are to be found here, you will also find more relaxing options available. The renowned and state approved health resort Bischofsmais with its approx. 3,200 inhabitants is found in the lower Bavarian region of Regen in the middle of the natural park of the Bavarian Forest. The town was formerly dominated by agriculture. With its unique forest landscapes and hills, the area is known today for its large selection of ski and toboggan runs, an extensive cross-country network and diverse hiking trails. Hauzenberg has been state-recognised air health resort since 2002 and is located at an altitude of 546 m in the Danube forest region in the Southern Bavarian forest. The city Passau, which is definitely worth a visit, lies approx. 25 km away and the three country triangle Germany, Austria and Czech are more or less located around the corner. From the peak of the county Passau, the high Oberfrauenwald (950 m), you can enjoy a view all the way to Austria, thanks to an observation tower!This region is the only one to find Germany's graphite, through which Hauzenberg became famous for being Germany's capital city for graphite industries. The first mines started to develop over a century ago, some are still in operation and its rocks can be found in historic buildings.The north facing slope of the Oberfrauenwald is perfectly suitable for winter sports athletes, as differences in altitude are part of the geographic features. Within the city area there are unsteady climatic differences: When spring starts in the lower part of the area, it is still freezing in the higher parts.
The state-recognised spa resort St. Englmar is situated at an altitude of 808 m and is known as the centre of winter sports in the Bavarian Forest. The idyllic village is located on a southern slope of a mountain range in the Bavarian Forest and offers ideal conditions for skiing, winter hiking, tobogganing or horse-drawn sleigh rides. Here you will find both an entertaining and eventful holiday, as well as all sorts of relaxation and fun in a beautiful natural setting. The Arber, the Bavarian Forest's highest mountain at 1,456 m, became well-known due to the international ski world cup. The local mountains Predigtstuhl, Pröller and Hirschenstein also offer great winter sports opportunities.
