The city of Monastir is situated on the Mediterranean coast of Tunisia, at a distance of 160 km from the capital Tunis.
It is the capital of Monastir Governorate, an important airport and one of the most important resorts on the Tunisian coast.
Monastir has been inhabited since time immemorial, archaeologists have found here Berber settlements, a Phoenician port, a Carthaginian and Roman city, a colony of Byzantine and finally the center of the city is famous Christian monastery and given the modern name of the town, Monastir of course coming from the Monastery.
Mahdia, Arabic: (al-Mahdiya), is a Tunisian coastal city with 37,000 inhabitants.
