Goa is located on the west coast of India, a region known as Konkani. Neighboring states are Maharashtra and Karnataka to the north east and south.
The state, bordering the Arabian Sea on the west coast. The state capital is Panaji, although the largest city is Vasco da Gama. Goa was colonized by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, converting many of the locals to Christianity. Portuguese colony lasted
for about 450 years until the country was annexed by India in 1961.
